How to Store an Area Rug Properly

Proper storage can help protect an area rug from creases, moisture, insects, fading, and unnecessary fiber damage. Whether you are storing a rug during a move, renovation, or seasonal room change, the way it is prepared matters.

Clean the Rug Before Storage

A rug should be clean and completely dry before it is stored. Dust, food particles, pet hair, and other organic debris can attract insects and contribute to odors over time.

For valuable Persian, Oriental, wool, handmade, or antique rugs, professional cleaning before long-term storage is often a good precaution.

Roll the Rug Instead of Folding It

Folding can create hard creases that may become difficult to remove, especially after months in storage. Whenever possible, roll the rug evenly around a sturdy tube with the pile facing inward or according to the rug’s specific construction.

Avoid rolling it too tightly, which can place unnecessary pressure on the foundation and edges.

Use Breathable Protection

Wrap the rolled rug in breathable fabric, rug storage paper, or another material designed for textile storage. Avoid sealing a rug tightly in ordinary plastic for long periods because trapped moisture can create condensation, mildew, or odor problems.

Choose a Dry, Climate-Controlled Space

Garages, sheds, and damp basements can expose rugs to large temperature swings and humidity. A clean, dry, climate-controlled area is much safer for long-term storage.

Keep the rug elevated from concrete floors and away from areas where plumbing leaks or water intrusion could occur.

Protect Wool Rugs from Moths

Wool and other natural fibers can attract clothes moth larvae, particularly when a rug remains undisturbed for long periods. Cleaning before storage removes many of the particles that make a rug attractive to pests.

Inspect stored rugs periodically for loose fibers, webbing, larvae, or new areas of pile loss.

Check the Rug During Long-Term Storage

If a rug will remain stored for many months, inspect it occasionally rather than leaving it untouched for years. Make sure the wrapping remains dry and that the rug has not developed odor, insect activity, or moisture damage.
