Needlepoint rugs require a different kind of care than most pile rugs. Their stitched construction, exposed yarns, decorative borders, and fabric foundation can make them especially vulnerable to pulled threads, edge wear, distortion, and improper cleaning.
For this Inland Empire project, the rug needed both professional cleaning and repair after years of use had left several sections worn and uneven.
Why Needlepoint Rugs Need Specialized Handling
Unlike hand-knotted rugs, needlepoint pieces are typically created by stitching yarn through a canvas foundation. That structure gives them their detailed design, but it also means aggressive agitation can loosen stitches or place stress on already weakened areas.
Before cleaning, we inspected the front and back of the rug for broken yarns, loose stitching, edge damage, color stability, and areas where the foundation had become exposed.

Cleaning Around Vulnerable Areas
The most fragile sections were identified before any moisture was introduced. Dry soil and loose debris were removed carefully so grit would not remain trapped within the stitched surface.
The rug was then cleaned using a controlled method selected for its fibers, dyes, and foundation. Extra care was taken around damaged sections to avoid enlarging existing openings or pulling loose yarns further out of place.
Repairing Worn and Damaged Needlepoint Sections
Once the rug was clean and fully dry, the repair work could be evaluated more accurately. Loose threads were secured, weakened areas were stabilized, and damaged sections were corrected where appropriate to help prevent additional unraveling.
The goal was to preserve as much original material as possible while restoring a cleaner and more balanced appearance.
Finished with Preservation in Mind
After cleaning and repair, the rug looked brighter and more even, while the vulnerable sections were better protected against continued wear. The original stitched character remained intact without making the restored areas look overly new.
