Pet odor in an Oriental rug is rarely limited to the top of the pile. Urine can travel through the face fibers, settle around the knots, and reach the foundation beneath. Once that happens, surface sprays and ordinary carpet cleaning may improve the smell temporarily without removing the source.
For this Fountain Valley project, the rug required both careful textile cleaning and a treatment plan designed around contamination below the visible surface.
Evaluating the Rug Before Treatment
Oriental rugs vary widely in fiber, dye type, weave density, backing, age, and repair history. Before applying moisture or treatment products, we examined the rug from both sides and checked the affected areas for color instability, weakened foundation threads, previous spot-cleaning residue, and signs of repeated pet accidents.

This inspection was especially important because aggressive deodorizing chemicals can create dye migration, fiber damage, or permanent texture changes in handmade rugs.
Reaching Odor Trapped in the Foundation
The rug first underwent dry-soil removal to clear away dust, pet hair, and loose grit. Removing that material gave us better access to the contaminated sections and prevented unnecessary soil from entering the wash.
The affected areas were then treated with rug-safe solutions chosen to break down odor-causing residue rather than cover it with fragrance. Treatment was allowed to penetrate through the pile and into the foundation where the contamination had settled.
Afterward, the rug was washed and thoroughly rinsed to flush away released residue. Special care was taken to control moisture, agitation, and drying conditions so the rug’s dyes, weave, and shape remained stable.
Final Odor Check and Textile Finishing
Odor evaluation took place only after the rug was completely dry. A damp rug can temporarily hide or distort the true result, so final inspection included checking the treated areas, reviewing the foundation, grooming the pile, and finishing the fringe by hand.
The rug returned to the Fountain Valley home noticeably fresher, cleaner through the foundation, and free from the heavy fragrance often left behind by masking products.
