Hand-Knotted Wool Rug Edge Repair and Foundation Rebuilding

This Gentle Genie Rug Care project involved a hand-knotted wool Oriental rug with a traditional tribal design, dark wool field, red border, and geometric pattern work. The rug was made with a wool pile over a cotton foundation, giving it both beauty and structure.

The Rug Damage

The rug had serious edge damage and foundation loss. A section near the side of the rug had lost wool pile, border detail, and supporting structure, leaving the white cotton foundation exposed.

On a hand-knotted rug, this type of damage must be repaired correctly. The wool knots are tied around the foundation threads, so when the foundation becomes exposed or weakened, the surrounding area can loosen and continue to unravel.

Rug Repair Work Completed

Our repair team rebuilt the damaged section by installing new cotton warp threads across the open area. This restored support to the rug’s foundation and helped stabilize the surrounding wool pile.

After the foundation was rebuilt, the damaged edge was reinforced to stop further fraying and separation. The repair strengthened the affected area while preserving the original handmade construction of the rug.
